Throughout this course I challenged myself with many new and unfavorable mediums. Great teachers always push you boundaries, and I am glad I got that - it has made me a better artist. I used Prisma colors, Oil pastels, Acrylic paint, Water color, and Collage. I had to learn many new techniques to execute my peices how I would like. But the main goal of this course was to achieve a three piece final that had one main theme, so I chose “heather.” My theme was myself and my life and what described me. I chose to do two visual representations of me, through self portraits, because I wanted to challenge myself and try to make a clear distinct pieces of me. I did the one on the left in Prisma colors, which is my favorite medium. The reference photo was from a selfie I took a few months back. I got inspired because of the shadows on my face. While I did the other two peices in Oil pastels. I thought of this medium since my table mates made peices in this same medium and I wanted to try. So I decided to find another picture of myself that I liked. I picked one with a Snapchat filter so it would have more layers to the photo - and not be so basic. Finally, I decided to draw my dog Shelby. She is a huge part in my life and something I love so much. She is too cute not to crest art about. The most challenging part about making the Shelby was her face. The brindle fur coat with the tiny composition and the specific details were hard to get, but after a break through it became easier. In my first piece, Heather in primsa color, the most challenging part was the shadows on the face and learning how to blend it into the rest of the skin to make it look as realistic as possible. Using the reference photo was tricky, but I mostly used my knowledge of the medium and trusted myself to achieve the end result. I did also have a challenge with the second “Heather,” but with learning how to use Oil pastels, it was definitely a learning curve but it was worth it.
Overall I learned so much through this course, about my classmates, art, different mediums, and my art techniques. I was forced to use acrylic paint, and I hope I never use it again (oil is the best). I also really enjoyed taking a break from drawing and using my creativity towards a collage. It helped me create better compositions and balance throughout my peices. I wish I could take this course again!
